Interesting fact:

Saint Valentine was a kind-hearted priest who went against the wishes of his authorities. It is thought that they banned marriages between young men and women because so many of his soldiers were refusing to leave their wives to go off to war. Valentine didn’t agree with this and so went ahead and performed illegal marriage ceremonies. He was eventually caught and imprisoned before being sentenced to death. It is thought that the day of his death was February 14th. St Valentine soon became the patron saint of lovers.
