There are some super old Valentine’s traditions that aren’t very common today. In the Middle Ages, it is said that young people would draw names to see who their Valentine’s for that year would be. The name would be written on a piece of paper that was attached to their sleeves for a week – it is said that this is the origin of the phrase ‘wear your heart on your sleeve’! In Wales, special wooden spoons were carved and given to young women. The spoons often had keyholes carved into them to signify that their sweetheart had ‘unlocked’ their heart.
