Have you ever heard of a Busk Valentine? Sailors used to send Busk Valentines to their sweethearts to make sure they remembered them. They were long sticks made of ivory or wood made to be worn inside a women’s corset – this way a woman could keep a token from their sweetheart close to her heart. The sailor would carve sentimental images into the busk which symbolized their connection to one another. Although Busk Valentines had a romantic meaning – predictably they were pretty uncomfortable to wear!
