American football was inspired by rugby. Unlike European football (soccer), once a player has been taken out of the game and put on the bench, he may return to the field later on. Each squad is made up of an Offensive unit in charge of scoring touchdowns, a defensive unit in charge of tackling and intercepting the opposing team, and a special team unit in charge of all kicking plays (i.e. punts and kickoffs).
