The term ‘chance your arm’ comes from a 15th Century dispute between two Irish families. When the Butlers fled into St Patrick’s Cathedral, the FitzGeralds solved the quarrel by cutting a hole through the door and offering to shake hands. There is still a Door of Reconciliation in the Cathedral to this day!
