Interesting fact:

The “equals” sign was invented by mathematician Robert Recorde in the 16th century. He was tired of writing out “is equal to” so he replaced it with two parallel horizontal lines. As he saw it, no two things could be more equal. The symbol then caught on, eventually becoming the standard symbol used in equations.
