There are cities with such an intense illumination that some of their residents have never seen a natural night sky. In 1994, an earthquake caused a blackout in Los Angeles which resulted in many emergency centres receiving anxious reports of a “giant silvery cloud”. That cloud was the Milky Way, which the callers had never seen before.
