Merv Griffin created Wheel of Fortune in 1976. He wanted to come up with a game similar to Hangman. The wheel was added after Griffin spoke to his staff. They liked the glamor that the wheel might add to the show. Needless to say, the game show was a hit, and the wheel has become an essential mainstay.
