Hoagies, heroes, and subs. These are all names that sandwiches have been called. Heroes and subs became popular in Connecticut during WWII. When Capaldo's Italian Deli received an order for 500 sandwiches from a US navy base, employees began to call the sandwiches 'subs' every time they were ordered.
