The first commercially available microwave oven was produced in 1947, but in appearance, this machine was anything but “micro”: the convenient kitchen appliance stood two metres tall and weighed almost 350 kilograms. It took almost 20 years to reduce the size and price of microwaves to make them affordable for the average household.
