Satoshi Tajiri, creator of Pokémon, said that the game was inspired by insects. As a child, he used to collect insects and examine their behavior. However, as urban development pushed insects out of their natural habitats, many children left insect-catching behind, so Tajiri developed a game with the insect-catching concept in mind.
